Accessible Parking Sign Requirements
Posted by Sign Optima on
Accessible parking signs identify spaces reserved for drivers who qualify to use them and help people find the appropriate parking area. Under the federal ADA Standards, required parking identification signs display the International Symbol of Accessibility. Van spaces also need the designation āvan accessible.ā
The sign's content, height, and placement must be considered together. California adds requirements beyond the federal rules, so a generic wheelchair-symbol sign may not provide all the information a California project needs.
What must an accessible parking sign show?
ADA §502.6 requires the International Symbol of Accessibility on parking identification signs and a van-accessible designation for van spaces. The designation may be incorporated into the identification sign or provided on an additional panel. The federal ADA Standards do not specify a universal sign size or color; state and local requirements can add those details.
The āvan accessibleā designation identifies the space's features. It does not, by itself, mean that only vans may use it. Parking eligibility and enforcement are governed by the applicable motor vehicle rules.
Parking sign height and placement
Mount required accessible parking signs at least 60 inches above the finished floor or ground, measured to the bottom of the sign. For a separate van-accessible panel below the main sign, measure to the bottom of that lower required panel too. The Department of Justice parking guidance states the minimum height for both signs.
Locate the sign where it remains visible when the space is occupied, without obstructing an access aisle or accessible route. Federal ADA §502.6 does not require a post to be centered across the parking space. The correct location depends on visibility, the site layout, and applicable state or local rules.

Additional California parking sign requirements
For projects governed by California Building Code Chapter 11B, §§11B-502.6 through 11B-502.6.3 add the following:
- Symbol and finish: a white International Symbol of Accessibility on a blue background, on a reflectorized identification sign with at least 70 square inches of area.
- Fine notice: āMinimum Fine $250ā as additional language or an additional sign below the accessibility symbol.
- Height: the usual minimum is 60 inches to the bottom of the sign; signs within a circulation path require at least 80 inches.
- Location: the sign must be visible from the parking space and permanently posted immediately adjacent to it, within the projected space width at its head end, or on a wall at the interior end.
California also has pavement-marking and additional tow-away-sign provisions in §§11B-502.6.4 and 11B-502.8. The tow-away notice must include the required permanent vehicle-recovery information. Review the full sign package and site plan together instead of treating the identification sign as the entire parking installation.
Painted symbols do not replace required signs
A wheelchair symbol on the pavement can be hidden by a parked vehicle. The U.S. Access Board parking guide explains that surface markings do not substitute for required elevated identification signs. Pavement markings and signs perform complementary functions.
Check exceptions and the parking layout
Federal §216.5 includes identification-sign exceptions for sites with four or fewer total parking spaces and for certain residential spaces assigned to specific dwelling units. These exceptions do not remove the underlying accessible-space requirements. Do not assume a federal exception also removes California or local signage obligations.
A sign alone does not make a space accessible. Check the required number and location of spaces, access aisles, slopes, surfaces, connecting accessible route, and van clearance. At least one of every six required accessible spaces, or fraction of six, must be van accessible under the federal standards.
Before ordering or installing
- Confirm the governing code and approved accessible parking layout.
- Select the proper identification sign and required supplemental panels for each space.
- Check visibility with a vehicle parked in the space.
- Measure to the bottom of the lowest required panel and check any higher local minimum.
- Keep posts, bases, and sign panels out of required clear walking and transfer areas.
- Verify pavement markings and any required entrance or tow-away notices.
Common questions
Is the minimum height measured to the top of the sign?
No. It is measured to the bottom. A lower supplemental panel must be included in the height check.
Must the post be exactly centered?
No universal federal ADA centering rule applies. California's listed location options also do not require an exact centerline location for the post.
Can I use the same sign for every state?
Check the jurisdiction first. Required wording, sign design, mounting details, and enforcement information can differ.
